College of Ed

College of Education Centennial Celebration

From its early roots as the State Normal School for the Second Normal District of Missouri, the University of Central Missouri has had a longstanding tradition of producing quality educators to prepare the next generation of students.

This year the university celebrates the centennial of its College of Education (COE), dating back to the naming of Central Missouri State Teachers College in 1919. It was the first name change since the institution’s founding in 1871. The impetus for an institutional name change came at noon on May 20, 1919, when Missouri Gov. Frederick D. Gardner signed into law a bill to rename all of the Normal Schools in Missouri.

Fun and educational events throughout the COE centennial year will engage faculty, staff, students, education alumni and other interested campus and community members. The golf tournament July 26 kicks off the celebration, and other activities range from honoring outstanding alumni educators to publicly unveiling a vision for the college's future.

Save the date for these upcoming events:

  • August 15: Ribbon Cutting for Legacy Suite in Lovinger Education Building
  • October 25–-26: College of Education Centennial Celebration Weekend

This Legacy Suite will be used to support philanthropic personnel serving the college and its students, and will be accessible to college alumni. We hope you will join us on the golf course and on campus to remember the College of Education's legacy and prepare for its future!

My Central

My legacy

The University of Central Missouri’s College of Education is celebrating its centennial during the 2019–2020 academic year. The college’s 100-year history is grounded in the preparation of teachers and administrators for early childhood, elementary, middle school and secondary classrooms throughout the state of Missouri and beyond.

“The foundation of this university sits on the shoulders of teachers and teacher education leaders across the state, and we have remained a leader in teacher preparation in the state of Missouri for 100 years.”

— Dr. Robert Lee, Dean of UCM's College of Education
