Crane Stadium Groundbreaking

Jim Crane, UCM Class of '76, has owned the Houston Astros since 2011. A St. Louis native, Crane was a standout pitcher for Mules Baseball in the mid-1970s. He was 21-8 with a 2.42 earned run average and ranks first in career complete games (23) and shutouts (7), and third in career strikeouts (215). He holds the program's single-game strikeout record (18), and in 1997 was inducted into the Central Missouri Athletic Hall of Fame.

In 1998 Crane was a primary underwriter of a $1.2 million renovation of the Mules Baseball field, now named the James R. Crane/Robert N. Tompkins Field. He funded an upgrade of the field in 2015 with a new synthetic turf playing surface and in 2020 contributed $1.5 million toward a new 2,500-square-foot concrete and steel locker room and players lounge facility, new restrooms, a new entry plaza and upgrades to seating. The Crane Stadium expansion project was completed in 2021.
